SU Global are offering Staffordshire University students an opportunity to travel to Atma Jaya University, Jakarta, Indonesia for a 4-week group programme incorporating a two week work-experience/work-shadow.
Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia is an institute of higher learning in Jakarta, Indonesia. Atma Jaya has three campuses in Jakarta Metropolitan Area, the main campus is in Semanggi, South Jakarta. The second campus, the centre for health development, is in Pluit, North Jakarta, next to its teaching hospital, Atma Jaya Hospital. A new campus is in Tangerang, Banten (also called BSD Campus), and is planned to be the main campus for undergraduate students.
This SU Global group experience with short work-experience/work-shadow is now being developed. The expected format of the programme is: -
Week 1 - Introduction to Indonesian business and culture (classroom based with some cultural visits)
Week 2 - Work-experience/work-shadow
Week 3 - Work-experience/work-shadow
Week 4 - Evaluation activities (classroom based with some cultural visits)
Areas for work experience
It is expected that work-experience/work shadowing placements will be within the university (internal) and using close business contacts (external) based near the university. Possible placement areas may include: -
- Work as lab assistant: Support Atma Jaya researchers, focussing on research projects and/or your own research project.
- Volunteering: Work with Atma Jaya community service wing. Atma Jaya are closely affiliated with many local social institutions.
- Work-shadowing: You will be assigned to Atma Jaya university employees related to the employment sector you are interested in. This area is general and should work well with most fields of study. Some placements may need to be based in external companies.
You will need to be flexible and broad with your area of work-experience/work-shadow, as opportunities are limited by availability within the university and the short nature of the experience. Consider the generic skills you can develop from participation, rather than the need to work in a niche area. Work experience, work-shadow, and volunteering are a great way to demonstrate your enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion for your chosen subject area in job applications.
Summary
This experience is for you if:
- You are happy to be away from home abroad for 4 weeks+
- You want an organised experience with a variety of different activities (some of which you may enjoy more than others) and are prepared to join in everything.
- You enjoy spending time with other people, even if you have not met them before.
- You understand that accommodation is shared (you cannot have your own room) on the basis of 2 to 3 people to a room and this will not be not a problem for you.
- You want to “challenge yourself”, “try something new” and “get out of your comfort zone”
- You understand that this is an academic programme, there will be a mixture of lectures, learning activities and some touristic elements to help you develop your skills set, cultural awareness, and employability
- You are excited to explore something new, happy to fit in and be part of a larger group and flexible with how you approach the experience
This experience may not be for you if:
- You are looking for a holiday
- You are expecting lots of time off programme to undertake your own trips, visits and sight seeing
- You need your own single accommodation
- You prefer not to be in a group with other people for a long time
- You don’t like trying new things and have difficulty when plans change
- You need to take time off fixed programmes for rest breaks (our summer school programmes can be very busy with activities – you are expected to commit to them all)
- You are expecting that the general programme will be personalised/amended to meet your specific wishes – this is unfair to the rest of the group and is not possible
