Applying for accommodation

Your University journey is taking shape. You've chosen your course and decided on a great place to live, now it’s time to apply for University accommodation.

Who can apply

You can apply for accommodation if you've selected University of Staffordshire as either your firm or insurance choice University via UCAS. You will need to have accepted your offer, and have received your Student ID number.

Applicants who have placed University of Staffordshire as their insurance choice are able to apply, however please note that priority is given to students who have us as their first choice.

International students

If you're joining us as a first-year international student we will guarantee you accommodation at our Stoke-on-Trent campus (subject to the meeting the below criteria). You'll need to make sure that:

Care leavers and estranged students

If you are coming to us from care, or are an estranged student, please let us know in your application so that we can provide the most appropriate service to you.

If you would like to discuss anything or have any questions, feel free to contact the Residence Life team.

We'll be able to send you an offer of accommodation after you have firmly accepted your course offer and your course offer is unconditional. Once we email you your offer of accommodation, you'll have a limited amount of time to accept or reject the offer (please check your offer for these details).

When to apply

Applications for academic year 2025/2026 will open 1st March 2025.

Before you apply for accommodation, please check that:

  • You've formally accepted your course offer through UCAS or the University

  • You've waited at least 48 hours after accepting your offer to allow processing time

  • You have your student reference number. This is the eight-digit number found on most correspondence from the University

Once ready, it’s a good idea to apply as soon as possible. You’ll need to indicate your preferred choice of accommodation which we allocate on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to apply

  1. Register for the ResLife portal

Once registered, you’ll be sent an email within 24 hours with your validation code. Make sure you check your junk folder. Enter this code exactly as it appears in your email. If it's not there after 24 hours, please contact us at ResLife@staffs.ac.uk and we'll help you out. You’ve now registered on our ResLife portal, and can log into the portal at any time using the password you’ve set up.

  2. Start your application

You’ll need to choose your academic year, and what kind of student you are; for example, undergraduate or postgraduate. Make sure you choose carefully otherwise your application may be rejected and you’ll have to apply again.

  3. Choose your accommodation

Take a look through our accommodation options to make sure you’re happy with your choice by clicking ‘Find out more’. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click apply to add it to your preferences. You'll need to add all of the different available accommodation options in preference order before you can move onto the next step. Your application will not be complete and we will not receive it if you do not add all available types of accommodation to your application.

  4. Enter your details

Complete any further details, including medical conditions – please add specific notes about accessibility needs, so that we can be sure we have the right accommodation for you. At this point, you can select if you prefer mixed or same gender sharing, and we will do all we can to try and accommodate. If you want to be grouped together with friends or people you already know, make sure you all add the same group reference to your applications. This can be any word or code you all agree on such as "John's group" for example.

  5. Review and submit your application

It’s time to check that everything is correct to the best of your knowledge. Make sure that your preferences are correct and make a note of the start and end date as these are your move-in and move-out dates. Once you’re happy, press submit to send your application to us.

What happens next?

We work through applications in date order from when we receive them, so be sure to get your application in as early as possible to improve your chances of getting your first choice accommodation. Your application preferences are subject to availability, but we'll try our best to offer you the accommodation you want.

As you can imagine, there are a lot of applications so this process can take some time. Sit tight, we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

We'll only send you an offer when your application to the University is unconditional and we’re your first choice. This means that if you've got exam results to wait for, it'll be after you receive them.
