Student safety

At University of Staffordshire, we are committed to providing a safe, secure and supportive environment for all staff, students and visitors who access our services, grounds and facilities.

Campus safety & security service

While on campus, you will more than likely see a member of our friendly security staff who are on hand to ensure your safety at all times. The Campus Safety & Security Service make regular patrols of our campuses both on foot or in our security vehicles, and are contactable 24-hours to react to any concerns that you may have.

You can get in touch with our security control room by telephone or email:

All of our buildings are key-card protected, including our student accommodation, and we have a CCTV network around campus to protect staff, students and members of the public who may visit our campus.

In addition to an in-house security service, University of Staffordshire also has an arrangement with Staffordshire Police in order that police officers are allocated to the University to prevent and target crime affecting the University, students and staff.

SafeZone app

As part of our duty of care to our University community, University of Staffordshire has made the SafeZone app available to all students and staff. The app allows you to alert our University Security Team via your mobile phone if you ever need urgent assistance or first aid, or if you have an emergency while on campus. If you are off campus, it will alert the police for you, ensuring help will be on hand soon. You can download the SafeZone app on Google Play, or the Apple App Store.

Be Safe campaign

Be Safe is an ongoing campaign from the Students' Union aiming to raise awareness of safety and the preventative measures that we can all do at University, home, travelling or anywhere to ensure better safety.

We are one of the top-performing Student Unions in the country in the Best Bar None awards, scoring 100% for our processes that keep you safe in our venues. Best Bar None is a Home Office and drinks industry-supported scheme that aims to improve standards in the evening and nighttime economy. A requirement of the awards is that all staff and security to be trained in all aspects of safety.

Our Security teams are Security Industry Authority qualified and licensed. The Students' Union also employs a range of other initiaives to keep you safe, including: Union Angels who will help you to get home safely if you feel unsafe or unwell when leaving our venues. If you are getting unwanted attention on a night out, or feel you need help getting out of a potentially unsafe situation, simply Ask for Angela at the bar, and the team will help you out.

Part of the Nightlife Partnership, working with the police and other local pubs and clubs to ensure our venues are free of known criminals. A zero-tolerance policy to drugs, with regular awareness campaigns. Regular searches on entry and CCTV in all of our venues. Clear cups, plus lids on request, and anti-spiking campaigns.

Safeguarding

At University of Staffordshire, we are committed to providing a safe, secure and supportive environment for all staff, students and visitors who access our services, grounds and facilities. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Staff and students alike have a role to play in keeping each other and themselves safe. We all have a duty to take action if we have a cause for concern about the safety and wellbeing of others.

In response to this duty of care, we have in place established safeguarding policies and procedures and designated officers responsible for receiving and acting upon reports of safeguarding concerns. These officers are trained to respond appropriately to reports and to support anyone who makes a report.
