Carbon Literacy Training

Carbon Literacy means being aware of the impact of our everyday activities on the climate, knowing what steps need to be taken to reduce carbon emissions and why it’s important that we all follow these steps.

University of Staffordshire offers Carbon Literacy Project accredited training to all students and staff, and to external organisations. Carbon Literacy Training takes place over a day, with a few hours of self-study work, covering the following topics.

  • Climate change science - the basics
  • Carbon footprints
  • A zero-carbon world
  • Climate change communication
  • Taking actions

Carbon literacy training recognises that the actions of individuals can and do make a difference. Understanding climate science basics and being able to act on them isn't just for students or professionals from environmental backgrounds. Everyone in society needs to know and be able to act to mitigate the effects of carbon. Climate change affects everything from the air we breathe, to how we travel, and the local environments that we love. Climate change will have a greater effect on future generations if we don't act now.

For staff and students

We believe that every student and staff member needs to be carbon literate if we are to help tackle the climate emergency and achieve our One Planet Pledge of carbon neutrality by 2030.

Why take the carbon literacy training?

  • The training is an impactful, engaging, interactive and fun way to learn.

  • It will equip you with the facts and understanding that you need to make positive changes for the climate in everyday life and to positively influence those around you.

  • Learners who complete the training successfully will be certified as Carbon Literate, and will receive a certificate as evidence. This can be used to boost your CVs and Personal Development Reviews.

  • It will help the university towards its Zero-Carbon commitments as well as helping you reduce your own carbon footprint and household utility bills!

For external organisations

Carbon Literacy is an understanding of the causes and impacts of our everyday carbon emissions – the fundamental awareness that offers a starting point for individuals and organisations in making real changes to the way we tackle climate change.

Become a carbon literate organisation

We can deliver Carbon Literacy training to external organisations to help them embark on their journey towards becoming a carbon literate organisation.

This training, delivered through webinars and self-study, is based on the award winning and accredited training developed by the Carbon Literacy Project.

Making the transition to low-carbon practices is one of the key challenges currently facing organisations and individuals. Sustainability and carbon awareness are increasingly needed at all levels within the workplace. Whether you're an environmental professional within your organisation, or you have a passion for environmental matters, this training will provide you with the skills to influence and implement low carbon practices within your organisation, community or household.

Using real-world examples, you will learn how various forms of action reduce carbon emissions. This short training course offers an active approach to learning allowing you to reflect on opportunities to be an agent for change in both your own life and in your workplace/community group.
