Online Pre-Sessional English (PSE) language courses

If you’ve applied for a course at University of Staffordshire but haven't fully met our English language requirements for 6.5(6.0) and 6.0(5.5), you may be eligible to study a pre-sessional English 6-week course.

By taking this course you will:

  • Prepare for your academic study and life in the UK

On successful completion of the course, you will have the confidence to undertake your studies at University of Staffordshire without the need to take any further English language tests.

Course structure, content and requirements

Online 6-week Pre-Sessional (for September 2024 intake)

  • Course dates: 1st July to 9th August 2024
  • Deadline to apply: 7th June 2024*
  • Full course fee: £750
  • Accept and pay deadline: 14th June 2024*

Online 6-week Pre-Sessional (for January 2025 intake)

  • Course dates: 28th October to 6th December 2024
  • Deadline to apply: 4th October 2024*
  • Full course fee: £750
  • Accept and pay deadline: 11th October 2024* 

Entry requirements

Offer holders with an overall IELTS of 6.0 (no component below 5.5) minimum for the 6.5 overall condition, or 5.5 (no component below 5.0) minimum for the 6.0 overall condition or equivalent**

**We accept the following IELTS tests equivalents: PTE Academic, CAE , Language Cert Academic SELT, TOEFL IBT, and Trinity ISE

Teaching methods and learning outcomes

All classes will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams.

There will be up to 16 online contact hours each week. Sessions will cover both general and academic English. These classes are designed to help you improve your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to help you cope with everyday life in the UK, and to prepare you for university study. They will also help you to develop your overall vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation whilst improving your potential IELTS score.

If you successfully complete the Pre-Sessional and achieve an overall Password Skills test score equivalent to B2/IELTS 6 (with no component below 5.5 in each skill) or IELTS 6.5 (with no component below 6.0 in each skill), you will automatically meet the English language entry requirements for Staffordshire University degree programmes.

Course offer holders – Referrals from our International Admission team, International Recruitment team or the English language team. 

How do I apply

Please email our PSE team (PSEnglish@staffs.ac.uk) giving your student reference number which you will find this at the top of your offer letter for the direct application link.

Please be aware that the applicant will need to pay the full fee (£750) for the PSE course, and the £6,500 deposit for the degree course which you have accepted the conditional offer to enrol on to the PSE course.
