Our first year Sports Journalism students got to experience a day at the races last month. They were accompanied to Uttoxeter Racecourse by Daily Mail journalist Dominic King along with Course Leader Ian Whittell.
“It was the first time for many to be at the races (including myself). It put us out of our comfort zone, which was a good thing, allowing us to see how we as future journalists need to adapt to different unknown sports, and to still be able to write about it even if we lacked knowledge on the sport.” Connor Coyle, First Year Sports Journalism Student
Students were able to get a feel for covering the action as it happened. They were also able to gain insight into the sport by spending time asking questions to the general manager, clerk and business director in addition to benefitting from journalism industry guidance from Dominic King.
“His knowledge and experience of the sport was incredibly helpful for me especially as I was in a setting that was unfamiliar to me almost entirely.” Mark Matthews, First Year Sports Journalism Student
“We were able to enjoy all seven races of the day as we liked, and this allowed us to get in and amongst the crowd. The atmosphere was incredible, and only added to what was a fantastic experience.”
