The facility, based at the Stoke-on-Trent campus, is shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) West Midlands Awards 2025.
Designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the nursery provides a welcoming and inspiring environment for early years education, fostering a strong connection to the surrounding woodland and nearby nature reserve.
Set next to deciduous woodland yet close to the city centre, the Woodlands Nursery became fully operational in 2023, representing a significant step forward as the University’s first carbon-neutral building. It also expanded its previous capacity to offer up to 100 full day-care places for children aged from 0 to five. It also provides childcare and education for children aged five to 12 outside of term time, supporting the University’s students, staff, and the wider community.
The RIBA West Midlands Awards recognise outstanding architecture across the region, celebrating projects that demonstrate innovation and contribute positively to their communities. This year’s shortlist features nine projects, including educational, residential, and commercial buildings. The inclusion of the Woodlands Nursery highlights the University's commitment to creating high-quality, sustainable spaces that enhance learning and wellbeing.
This follows the University’s success in 2024, when The Catalyst – a major hub for learning, innovation, and collaboration – was also shortlisted for a RIBA West Midlands Award. Both projects highlight the University’s continued investment in state-of-the-art facilities.
Sally McGill, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Lead for Sustainability at University of Staffordshire, said: “We are delighted that Woodlands Nursery has been recognised by RIBA. The building not only offers an outstanding environment for children but also exemplifies our commitment to sustainable development on campus. The building not only offers an outstanding environment for children but also exemplifies our commitment to sustainable design and our long-term commitment to carbon reduction. Every detail of the building, from the choice of materials to the way it operates, reflects that approach.”
Amanda Sherratt, Head of Childcare and Family Services at University of Staffordshire, added: "Woodlands Nursery is designed to inspire curiosity and creativity in young children. The natural light, open-plan spaces, and connection to the outdoors create an environment where children can learn and play in a way that supports their development.
“The dedicated forest school strengthens links with local schools and provides hands-on outdoor learning experiences, helping children to develop confidence, an appreciation for nature, and a sense of responsibility for the world around them. By nurturing an early understanding of environmental stewardship, we encourage children to grow into responsible citizens who recognise their duty of care for our planet.”
FCB Studios worked closely with nursery management, staff, parents, and carers to design a space that is both stimulating and safe, while ensuring the highest standards of sustainability and educational excellence.
The facility features four vibrant and adaptable learning spaces, including areas for food preparation, wet play, and open-plan activities. It also includes a 24-place classroom, and an observational suite equipped with state-of-the-art digital technology, enabling real-time observation for trainee teachers, social workers, and Special Educational Needs Coordinators.
The winners of the RIBA West Midlands Awards will be announced later this spring.
