Facilities and expertise in Psychology

Undergraduate

Hands-on experience of industry-leading technology and techniques, together with simulated and actual work-related experiences helps bridge the gap between learning and real-world practice.

Digitally enabled and technologically advanced, our facilities take you out of the classroom so you can experience the feel of real-world working and prepare for your future career. You can use VR to monitor anything from eye tracking and motor control to personal interaction or the physiological changes from controlled hazards.

Our extensive specialist equipment includes lab-based and mobile electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), and biometric signal recording. You can monitor temperature-induced pain stimuli or test body responses including heart rate, galvanic skin response.

In our children’s lab, you can discover the work we do with volunteer families on campus and out in the community. Previous research topics have, for example, included exploring the impact of TV screen time on children’s behaviour, assessing creativity, and the role of psychology in preventing young children from suffering dog bites.

The staff in the Psychology Department were very approachable which made my time at University of Staffordshire more enjoyable. I gained training in all the latest equipment and software related to psychology research and the Science Centre, where the Psychology department is based, has state-of-the-art equipment that is available to all students.

Expertise

You will be taught by health psychologists who are actively involved in conducting high-quality research, as well as teaching and consultancy in a wide range of areas spanning health, illness and healthcare. The depth and breadth of their expertise is evidenced by the diversity of current projects. These range, for example, from developing a drawing technique to facilitate children’s eyewitness testimony to exploring the facilitators and barriers to breastfeeding in the Pakistani community and determining the links between exposure to natural outdoor environments and human health and well-being across Europe. Staff will incorporate their experience and insight into teaching and explore contemporary issues, such as conspiracy theories or cyber-bullying.
