Meredith Danks

Psychology and Child Development, 2021

Meredith Danks always knew she wanted to work with children. But it was her Psychology and Child Development degree that set her on her path.

Meredith's story

Work experience

Mirroring the scenarios you will encounter in professional life, our cutting-edge facilities, equipment and software help you practise and refine the practitioner skills you will come to rely on. You will be given the guidance to develop and conduct your own experiments, confidently analyse data, and produce professional-standard scientific reports.

Incorporating a blend of hyper-real and real-life scenarios, you could find yourself interviewing research participants, observing children play or investigating what grabs attention and focus using the eye tracker.

Surrounded by amazing people and in a place where amazing things happen, you’ll be joining a community of psychology researchers and professionals that extends beyond our university campus. You can work for us as a Psychology Advocate sharing your passion with prospective students, or on a research assistantship. Like Louise Middling, who studied the use of social media among young children. Past placement opportunities have included the prison service, health service and victim support.

I have gained so much more than a degree during my time at Staffs. I worked for the Psychology department as a Psychology Advocate which enabled me to share my passion for psychology with prospective students. I also took two years out during my degree to work at the Students’ Union, which gave me valuable work experience and invaluable life skills.

Our students

The best part of the course has definitely been having the opportunity to make a contribution to psychology research by creating and conducting my own study on a topic that I am interested in. I feel like having the freedom to choose my own research area and collect my own data has been a great experience, and one that will definitely become useful in the future.

I also really enjoyed having the chance to study so many different areas of psychology, including comparative psychology, social psychology, child psychology or neuropsychology. Some of which I have never been aware of before, making the course so much more interesting and unique.

Dominika Rabinska

BSc (Hons) Psychology

During my placement with Midlands Psychology CIC I had the opportunity to gain experiences that an undergraduate student could only dream of. I shadowed and worked closely with some incredible clinicians, who have taught me more than I ever thought possible. Furthermore, I gained experience within the Looked After Children Service and Supported Living Service. Working with these services has given me many fond memories and broadened my interests beyond the fields that I already knew.

BSc (Hons) Psychology and Child Development

The helpfulness of the staff, in addition to the open day confirmed my decision that Staffs was for me.

Following my undergraduate degree, completing the Health Psychology Masters degree at Staffs (the home of health psychology!) was an easy decision. The excellent teaching staff, with research and practice experience in various areas of Health Psychology affirmed my choice.
