How to use drawings to research child development

Outline

Most children love to draw. In this session we shall look at how these drawing can help us understand the cognitive and emotion development that occurs during childhood. Students will first be asked to take part in some drawing exercises, which will be used to start discussions about how their own drawings have changed since childhood, and what internal and external factors have influenced this change. Students will then be introduced to the idea of ‘expressive drawing’; they will learn about it as a research tool, how researcher evaluate the drawings of children, and the importance of inter-rater reliability in research.
