What to include in a graphic design or illustration university application portfolio?
Introduce yourself creatively through your portfolio. Start with a standout piece that's memorable and captures attention. Display work you take pride in, including self-initiated projects, showcasing your genuine passion for the subject. Your application portfolio can span a range of outcomes and mediums, including digital, traditional, 3D, sculptural, and textiles.
Portfolio content: beyond final outcomes
Don't just show finished work - share your process. Sketches and scamps illustrate how your ideas take shape. We look for potential and appreciate seeing your creative journey from research to the final concept. Sketchbooks that show development, problem-solving, and experimenting, including life drawing and mark-making, are also encouraged during the portfolio review.
Number of pieces and digital work
We recommend no more than five pieces, but focus on quality. Embrace digital and animated work, providing a diverse showcase of your skills. You can include screenshots of moving images and label accordingly. We appreciate a breadth of skills, whether in traditional or digital mediums.
Layout tips for your portfolio
Consistent layout is crucial. Showcase your work thoughtfully in terms of imagery and typography. When applying, you'll also be invited to submit a digital portfolio. Ensure consistency between them. Your digital portfolio can be a PowerPoint presentation, PDF or JPEG images, or a link to an online portfolio.
Preparing for the interview and portfolio review
Rehearse discussing your portfolio pieces to articulate your project development, processes, and design decisions. The portfolio review is your chance to express your passion and potential. Reflect on why you want to study the course you’re applying to and your career aspirations.
