University of Staffordshire Professor Dr Agata Lulkowska publishes essential filmmaking book

‘Filmmaking in Academia. Practice Research for Filmmakers’

Dr Agata Lulkowska with their published work "Filmmaking in Academia"

We're delighted that our Film and Media Associate Professor Dr Agata Lulkowska has had her work ‘Filmmaking in Academia. Practice Research for Filmmakers’ published by Routledge Focus.
The monograph fills a visible gap in literature addressing the how-to of creative practice research, here, more specifically, in filmmaking.

The book emerged out of necessity.  "I have been supporting many filmmaking-based PhDs, as well as those based in other creative practices, and I realised that what is fundamentally missing is the consistency among the examiners, supervisors and institutional guidance. Many early career researchers, but also experienced filmmakers coming to academia and pursuing their filmmaking as research, stumble across a messy environment which lacks
clear guidance."

Dr Lulkowska added "My passion for supporting others in achieving their (research and creative) potential made this book a very important personal project. The book aims to help emerging and existing filmmakers-researcher to understand their filmmaking practice as research, and the way it functions within academia. It directly links to my teaching at Staffs, and all the PhD candidates I support. "

“It is often about gaining enough confidence that what you’re doing is not only worth it but can lead to incredibly creative solutions. And there are so many ways in which film can be impactful and change people’s lives. Learning craft and trade and nurturing your creative and storytelling techniques is what we do at Staffs, from UG to postgraduate levels.”

The book will have an online launch (via Zoom) on Fri, Dec 13, 2024, 4:00 PM, in conversation with Professor Erik Knudsen, a top expert and authority in filmmaking-based research. It will be introduced by the Routledge editor, Emma Moore. For more details  to join please see the event on LinkedIn.
