The ThermoFluids lab allows practical learning to aid in the understanding of theory students learn in their lectures.
The two subjects’ thermodynamics and fluid mechanics are combined in the same lab in the SmartZone to reflect their similarity in applications and the cross-over of first principles used in both subjects. Fluid mechanics being a core topic, it is required for a multitude of engineering systems for example in cases where students want to predict the required force to move a body through a fluid which is a task that can transpire to many different applications. Thermodynamics being the study of energy and energy transformations, the two topics go hand in hand as its used to engineer systems of power generation, refrigeration, engines etc.
The SmartZone lab for Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics is available for students to use as part of their module in technical instructions and for further research purposes provided supervision is given by the technical specialist. A long list of apparatus and equipment can be found in the lab which are available for students to use such as the refrigeration cycle demonstration unit and the two-stage compressor which enable students that learn using more practical and visual methods to understand the content in their module.
