Exercise Physiology and Human Performance

The Exercise Physiology and Human Performance laboratories enable the conduction of a range of physiological and nutrition-based exercise tests for health and sports performance.

The Exercise Physiology and Human Performance laboratories house a number of items of specialist laboratory equipment that allows for a range of exercise tests to be conducted, these include:

  • Direct and indirect assessment of maximal oxygen consumption via different modalities of exercise.
  • Blood lactate response to incremental exercise
  • Assessment of maximal intensity exercise
  • Assessment of muscular power and strength
  • Monitoring of internal and external load during exercise
  • Lung function and efficiency tests
  • Bone strength tests

These protocols are conducted during module practical sessions and are designed to support theoretical content taught in lectures.

The laboratories are also used for staff and student research and for enterprise activities such as school and college visits and testing of individual athletes / sports teams via the University Peak Condition Clinic.
