Grants and funding

We recognise that many students may require extra financial support while at university.

There are a range of grants and extra funding available to students, subject to availability. Grants are presented to individual students based on a range of criteria, and do not need to be paid back.

Grants

There are a range of different grants to help support a variety of individuals from different student groups.

Disabled Students Allowance

DSA provides extra support for those students who incur extra course costs as a direct result of their disability. This support is not income assessed and you don’t have to repay it.

You can apply for DSA before you start your course and should contact your student finance provider for more details. If you're a part-time student you can apply for a pro-rata DSA as long as you are studying at least 50% of the course that full-time students would study each year.

How to apply for DSA

Care leavers and estranged students

Applicants who have been in local authority or foster care can receive a one-off higher education bursary of £2,000 from your local authority, which is paid in instalments. Your local authority will be able to assist in the application and answer any questions you may have.

Benefit entitlements

Your entitlement to state benefits is not affected when you're studying on a part-time course.

Please note: this does not apply if you're repeating part of a full-time course on a part-time basis. For more information, please contact a Students’ Union Adviser.

Extra financial support

We understand that going to university is a large financial commitment and sometime resources can be stretched, so to help we offer a Student Success Fund. The fund can assist students in the following ways:

  • To support students who incur unexpected costs because of an unforeseen emergency that is beyond their control.
  • To support students who have exhausted their available funds while they await their next maintenance loan instalment and/or seek employment.
  • To support students whose maintenance loan/grant is delayed by providing short term delayed funding loans.
  • To support students requiring dyslexia assessments by paying the cost of a full assessment.

You can apply for the Student Success Fund once you are an active student at University of Staffordshire.
