In 2003, I took up the position of Lecturer in Health Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University. One year later, I moved to Aston University to take up a Lectureship in Health Psychology as part of team who established the MSc Health Psychology programme. Expertise

My expertise lies in testing the utility of health psychology theories as predictors of health behaviours, such as alcohol consumption and physical activity. I also possess expertise in the design and development of health behaviour change interventions and systematic review and meta-analysis.

Research interests

My primary research interest is to better understand adults’ alcohol consumption, primarily by applying psychological theories to predict alcohol consumption collecting data using survey methods. I am also interested in adults’ knowledge, awareness and use of alcohol, dietary and physical activity guidelines published by health organisations. I also conduct research cross-culturally to compare patterns and prediction of alcohol consumption in different countries, for instance, working with the team who run the Global Drug Survey.

My secondary research interest is to use my knowledge of psychological theories to inform the design and development of interventions aiming to produce positive changes in health behaviour, as well as evaluating these interventions after they have been delivered to determine if they have worked as intended. I am currently working on an NIHR-funded trial to promote routine attendance at dental check-ups with the Dental School at the University of Liverpool. I have previously worked on interventions to promote eating a healthy diet in patient populations. One line of research involved working with Optometrists at Aston University to encourage patients with Age-related Macular Degeneration to consume micronutrients that help delay the progress of their condition. In addition, I am working with Nutritionists at the University of Manchester to promote healthy diet among patients recovering from Colorectal Cancer.
