Rebecca Jenkins

Lecturer

Health, Education, Policing and Sciences

I'm a Lecturer in Paramedic Science with a background as an HCPC-registered paramedic and experience in pre-hospital emergency care. My expertise lies in clinical skills, evidence-based practice, and student mentorship in practice-based learning. I worked for the Ambulance Service for 19 years, gaining extensive experience in pre-hospital emergency care and frontline patient management. Throughout my career, I responded to a wide range of medical emergencies, developing strong clinical decision-making skills and the ability to work under pressure in challenging environments. During this time, I also took on mentoring and training roles, supporting new paramedics and student paramedics in developing their clinical and professional competencies. My passion for education and professional development led me to transition into academia, where I now focus on preparing the next generation of paramedics for the realities of frontline care.

Expertise

I am a Lecturer in Paramedic Science and the Practice Placement Lead for first-year students. As an HCPC-registered paramedic, I have extensive experience in both clinical and academic settings, supporting students as they transition into professional practice. My teaching focuses on clinical skills, evidence-based practice, and non-technical skills essential for paramedic development. Before moving into higher education, I worked in pre-hospital emergency care, gaining hands-on experience in high-pressure environments. My passion for student support and professional development led me to academia, where I now mentor students and collaborate with placement providers to ensure high-quality learning experiences. I am also actively involved in curriculum development, particularly in enhancing simulation-based learning and interdisciplinary education.

My research interests include the integration of technology in paramedic education and the use of simulation for summative assessment. Beyond teaching and research, I work closely with industry partners, placement providers, and higher education institutions to foster collaborative learning opportunities and improve the student experience.

I collaborate with external agencies, including emergency services and healthcare providers, to create realistic and interdisciplinary training experiences for students. I have been involved in organising and facilitating simulations, integrating real-world scenarios into paramedic education. Additionally, I contribute to the development of electronic practice portfolios, ensuring students and employers benefit from efficient and effective documentation of clinical competencies. My work includes networking with professional bodies and external stakeholders to improve student employability and enhance the integration of academic learning with real-world practice.
