Jacob Finney

Senior Lecturer

Health, Education, Policing and Sciences

I’m a Senior Lecturer in Social Work, having spent the last 7 years as a practicing social worker in the field of children’s safeguarding. I am fortunate that this has given me invaluable experience in other related fields such as children with disabilities, adoption, fostering, children in care and a broad range of adult-orientated issues.

I have been a social worker since 2015, having obtained a master’s degree in Social Work from Keele University. However, I first found my passion for working with children and young people as a residential support worker with Looked After Children in 2011. It is here that I truly began to appreciate how capable, caring and resilient young people are, despite their adversities.

As a social worker, I have practiced in London and, most recently, my wonderful birthplace of Stoke-On-Trent. Working in London has afforded me the opportunity to work with and celebrate a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. Prior to this, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 2012 from Sheffield Hallam University.

I would describe myself as a systemic, trauma-informed and relational social worker. Promoting the wellbeing and emotional health of social workers in the workplace has also become an area of focus whilst in practice; something which I would like to continue researching and promoting moving forward.
