Expertise

Hazel's research portfolio extends to being implemented into bedside care and referenced in national guidelines. An example of this is through Hazel's invited participation with the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Guideline Development Group meeting ‘Nutrition Actions 2016 – 2018’. Hazel was tasked with providing recommendations to decide if the current guideline of exclusively breastfeeding for six months of life should continue or if the guidance needed revision.

The results of Hazel's research have been acknowledged and utilised by the WHO in “Protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding in facilities providing maternity and newborn services”. In addition, other international bodies such as European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition; French National College of Midwives; Latin American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine have referenced Hazel's research on breastfeeding in their clinical guidelines and protocols.

The results, from Hazel's research that she has led, are directly influencing and guiding the clinical care of neonates and infants. Hazel also worked with national bodies on developing paediatric research capacity (Children’s Health Ireland/ Health Service Executive); developed the Whitehouse-Smith model for clinical research nursing/midwifery structures (implemented in over ten NHS Trusts) and supported establishing the Republic of Ireland’s first Reference Research Ethics Committee.
