Giles Gater is a solicitor and senior lecturer who practiced in Manchester at a top 50 UK law firm. Giles is a University of Staffordshire alumni, specialising in property law, tax law, cyber law, and artificial intelligence (AI) law. Giles teaches and supervises students at levels 3 through 7 and he is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, showing his commitment to education.
Outside of his formal lecturing, Giles also enjoys conducting public/guest lecturers for other courses at the University of Staffordshire and for third parties. Within these lecturers, Giles introduces concepts around the regulation of AI as it is now within existing legal frameworks and into the future as AI evolves. He also lectures on the practical application of the law and the need for cohesion between professions, like accountants and solicitors, to ensure a client’s objectives are correctly identified and achieved. In this way, Giles focusses on commercial awareness as the tool to bridge the gap between knowledge and application, unlocking value for clients, students and the economy post student graduation.
Giles leads on written responses to House of Commons Committee reports as part of the team for the University of Staffordshire’s Centre for Crime, Justice, and Security research centre. In this capacity, Giles increases the civic impact of the great research conducted by the lecturer and researcher team at University of Staffordshire by encouraging more direct contact between University of Staffordshire experts and government committees.
Giles is the course leader on the two-year accelerated law degree programme and has a passion for teaching with a focus on employability. Giles is keen to see law graduates from University of Staffordshire continue to break into the highly profitable legal sector, just like he did. To this end, Giles’ knowledge of law firms and recruitment practices has already supported a number of students in finding employment within the legal sector.
