I am a Senior Lecturer in Psychology. I have several leadership positions, including course leadership for our single honour psychology and our psychological studies course, the Foundation link tutor for our foundation year course, and the service user and carer department representative. I am research active and supervisor project students including several PhD students. I am always happy to hear from people interested in my research, potential research and/or teaching collaboration, and/or PhD projects.

I have a variety of teaching experience through online and face-to-face platforms. For example, I have previously worked at the University of Derby where I was as a lecturer in Psychology on their online programmes. Within this role I developed and led different modules to ensure interactive and engaging content which promoted deep learning.

During my PhD at Keele University, I worked as a teaching fellow for 4 years and taught on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught modules, including core modules, research methods and health related modules. During this time, I led, supported and taught modules at Keele’s international collaborating University in China.

In between my teaching fellow position and lectureship at Derby, I worked as a researcher where I led process evaluations on several healthcare interventions including: 1) Increasing Physical Activity in Older People with Joint Pain (iPOPP). 2) INtegrating and improving Care for patients with infLammatory rheUmatological DisordErs in the community (INCLUDE) review. 3) PROvision of braces for Patients with knee OsteoArthritis (PROP OA): a randomised controlled trial.

I have also worked closely with self-advocacy organisations to develop dementia resources for people with a learning disability, carers and healthcare professionals.

Methodological expertise in designing qualitative research involving carers, people living with dementia, and people with physical and/or mental health conditions.

Creative and inclusive research methods such as Photovoice and photo elicitation.

Carers’ experiences, with a particular focus on their wellbeing.

Research interests

I have expertise in qualitative and inclusive methodologies, and aiming to understand and collaboratively improve the lives of people with physical and/or mental health problems, in particular, people living with dementia and their carers. I have listed some of my current research interests below:

  • Inclusive research methods.
  • Better understanding, through multiple perspectives including a positive psychology perspective, experiences of dementia, through individuals with dementia, their family, friends, and carers (informal and formal).
  • The care practices of carers and healthcare professionals of people with dementia, and people with a learning difficulty and dementia, including improving person-centred practices through dementia training.
  • Social interventions to improve/and or maintain the well-being of carers of people with dementia.

Dr Jessica Runacres, Dr Dan Herron, and Dr Fiona Cust have been awarded £5,402.00 by the BA Leverhulme Small Research Grants for their research project which aims to explore “How can universities better support student carers? An exploration of student carer priorities and support needs”.

Dr Dan Herron and Dr Jessica Runacres have been awarded £1877 as part of the university’s impact acceleration fund for a project exploring the support and research priorities of family carers of people living with dementia.

Teaching

I teach on a variety of modules across our undergraduate and post-graduate courses, including core and special option modules. I particularly enjoy teaching about qualitative methods, including creative qualitative methods.
