Brian Jacobs

Emeritus Professor in Community Regeneration

Justice, Security and Sustainability

I obtained a BA in Economics and Politics and an MA in Politics at Leeds University, then a PhD at Keele University. Following work in local government and the Civil Service, I developed interests in urban policy, ethnic minority involvement in the local policy process and community regeneration. I have researched urban policy and community issues internationally and have completed applied research assignments involving local authorities, health and third sector organisations. Recent work has concentrated on community resilience and urban crisis management. I am a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management.

Research interests

My research concentrates on urban policy and urban governance, having single authored four books in the field as well as other publications and papers. Early research concerned the role of ethnic minorities in the policy process while more recent research has concentrated on the management of community regeneration with a focus on UK local government and international policy experience.
I am also interested in community resilience and crisis management, performance and evaluation in community programmes and public services, regeneration partnerships, communities of practice and the grid/group approach applied to community cultures.
