Prof Atkins has also held several research grants as principal investigator for the EU, EPSRC and from industry and NHS Trust. He is also the inventor of several large-scale industrial patents in UK, USA, Canada, and Australia. Anthony was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in bioengineering and environmental engineering using real time sensor technology for Canada, USA, and South America. Quality Assurance Consultant in Health Informatics, ICT and Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, USA, UK, and India. Visiting Professor- Duale Hochschule Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Stuttgart, Jagiellonian University Poland, XI’an Jiaotong- Liverpool University (XJTLU) Suzhou, China, North-eastern University, Shenyang, China, Chengdu University TCM China, Faculty of Arts, Media and Technology, Chiang Mai Thailand, Shimla University India and City University Hong Kong. Chief External Examiner for Graduate Diploma Computing and IT Birmingham City University, BSc (Hons) Computing Science, Information Systems, Computing and Information Systems, Computer Network, Management Business Information Systems and HND Computing and Information Systems at University of West London, and University of South Wales, Cardiff, Wales. Quality Assurance Computer and IT Advisor University of West London and SE Asia collaborative partnership and Bedfordshire University in Sri Lanka.

I started at the University as a Senior Lecturer having worked in industry for several years and also as an Ass/Assoc Professor at Virginia Polytechnic and State University, Virginia in the United States. I was promoted to Principal Lecturer/Associate Professor responsible for Quality Assurance in Higher Education for the School of Computing which was one of the largest Computing Departments in the United Kingdom with 11 partnerships Colleges in the Staffordshire region. I was also the International Programme Advisor for APIIT SD-India (inception 2002 with 40 students per year) that increased to annual intake of 430 students - BEng Computing, Software Engineering, Multimedia, Electrical, Electronic and Mechatronics. The College started an MBA programme and MSc in Software Engineering with annual intakes of 20 and 60 respectively. This was part of the University’s Strategic plan in internal and overseas operations. This course was the 1st International Engineering Approved BEng (Hons) Computer Course accredited with AICTE for an overseas University; otherwise the qualification is not recognised in India.

I was then promoted to Reader/Professor/Emeritus Professor and was either the Principal Investigator and/or co-investigator for over £3.04 million grants on HEIF Smart Hospital Theatre Management (SHTM) using RFID Technology in the Internet of Things (IoT) in collaboration with NHS Trust. There was also a Smart Home project for integration into existing Local Authority support systems to produce a proactive intelligent monitoring systems to support timely and adequate care to the elderly using inexpensive sensor technology to support people to be independent which will be a challenging social and financial issue in the near future for the UK/EU.

I was co-investigator for Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Sustainable European programme Sustainable e-Tourism a partnership between Higher Education Institutions from four European countries (France, Italy, Germany and UK) and six Asian countries (Mongolia and five countries from the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS): Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and China. I was the co-investigator for EP/F033303/1 Travel. I was the co-investigator regarding funding to enable the MCDS Research Group to participate in EU FP7 consortia for Mobile SCM & RFID Technology in Recycling in the Construction Industry. I was the principal investigator for EPSRC GR/T18899/01 Knowledge Transfer to SMEs in Computing and IT together with coordination and supervision of 12 MRes and 4 Research Assistants.

In September 2017 Dr Awad AlRasheed (supervised by Prof Anthony Atkins and Associate Professor Russell Campion) and Dr Fawaz Alharbi supervised by (Prof Anthony Atkins and Dr Clare Stainer) were honoured as outstanding PhD Research Students from the School of Computing and Digital Technologies Staffordshire University by His Excellency HRH Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf Al Saud Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Mayfair London. Dr Awad AlRasheed was awarded the Best Presentation at the Conference in New York ‘Using Knowledge Management and Visualisation Concepts to Improve Patients and Hospitals Staff Workflow’ Authors: A. AlRasheed, A.S. Atkins and R. C. Campion ICKMS 2017: 19th International Conference on Knowledge Management Systems, New York, USA, August 2017. Dr Fawaz Alharbi was also awarded for the Best Student Award for the number of papers he had written with his supervisors. There were only 15 students attending this celebration from all the Saudi Arabian students in the UK which is a major compliment to Staffordshire University.

In September 2016 Mr Majid Alsulami (supervised by Prof Anthony Atkins and Associate Professor Russell Campion) from the School of Computing and Digital Technologies, Staffordshire University was honoured as an outstanding PhD Research Student for attaining Three Best Conference papers. This award was presented by His Excellency HRH Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf Al Saud Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Cultural Attaché Dr. Abdulaziz Bin Ali Almagushi to the United Kingdom, at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Mayfair London in honour of high achieving Saudi students and was live streamed on Saudi Arabian National TV networks.
