Staffs Professors named among world’s top scholars

Three Staffordshire University professors have been ranked in the top 0.5% of all scholars worldwide

Professor Wilfred McSherry is ranked #6 in the world for research into Spirituality

Among the trio is Staffordshire University Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Jones who has achieved ‘Top Scholar’ status, ranking #268 in the field of Social environment and #293 for Governance in the world.

Author or editor of 13 books, Professor Jones is highly regarded internationally for economic and political geography. His latest book Cities and Regions in Crisis: The Political Economy of Sub-National Economic Development was awarded the Regional Studies Association Best Book award 2021. Professor Jones was also recognised in Research.com’s 2023 Edition of Best Scientists in the World.

Commenting on this recognition, Professor Jones said: “It is a tremendous honour to be recognised among the top scholars globally. This acknowledgment not only reflects my work but also the collaborative efforts of my colleagues and the support from Staffordshire University. I am committed to continuing our research that addresses critical socio-economic challenges and contributes to the broader academic community.”

Fellow ‘Top Scholar’ Professor Elhadj Benkhelifa is ranked #119 in Cloud computing globally. A Professor of Computer Science and Digital Innovation, he leads Staffordshire University’s Centre for Smart Systems, AI and Cybersecurity (SSAICS) and has a longstanding interest in investigating biologically inspired solutions for resilient and secure cloud computing platforms.

Professor Benkhelifa said: “Could computing plays an increasingly important role in all of our lives and I am passionate about exploring innovative new ways to improve the efficiency and security of these systems. To be recognised among the top scholars in this field is a great achievement.”

ScholarGPS has also named Professor Wilfred McSherry among its ‘Highly Ranked Scholars’ and the #6 ranked scholar specialising in Spirituality. Highly Ranked Scholars are the most productive authors whose works are of profound impact and of utmost quality.

Wilfred McSherry is a Professor of Nursing with more than 30 years’ experience working in healthcare and is internationally recognised for his research in the areas of spirituality, spiritual care and dignity in care, ageing and dementia.

Professor McSherry is a founding and executive member of the International Network for the Study of Spirituality, was lead partner for the European research project Enhancing Nurses Competence in Providing Spiritual Care through Innovation Education and Compassionate Care (EPICC) and is a steering group member of the EPICC Network.

His work has informed debate and policy, including establishing the EPICC Spiritual Care Education Standard that is being used nationally and internationally within nursing and midwifery education.

“I have always tried to ensure that the research that I conduct has a practical relevance and application to nursing and health care practice. I am very proud that the work I have co-produced in collaboration with many colleagues has contributed to the development of of the study of spiritually globally,” Professor McSherry commented.
