Serious games is ever expanding at the moment. So going into a different industry, using the knowledge I've learned in games, other students will be able to do the same. It's a great way to go out and explore different avenues.
Corey Meir, 23, from Trentham, chose to study BSc (Hons) Computer Games Development at Staffordshire University after finding a love for making games at college.
“It was the closest choice for me, but it's also a brilliant university for the course”, he commented. “They really push your knowledge to be the best that it can be. The industry links were really good and that's how I got onto my placement.”
Corey discovered opportunities to work in ‘serious games’ and apply his games development skills in other industries. His placement was with defence company Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) creating simulators for new military platforms.
He explained: “We're designing and manufacturing the Challenger 3 main battle tank. I'm working on the simulators ensuring that we've got the right design for the crews inside.

During his course, Corey won an award for his work at the Defence, Simulation, Education and Training (DSET) conference in the ‘Serious Games Showcase’ with course mate Jack Follows.
Having graduated with first class honours Corey has now secured a full time role with the company where he completed his placement.
“I'd absolutely recommend the games courses at Staffs. It will teach you the techniques and knowledge needed to be able to expand your skill set and go into any industry using these technologies.”
Corey added: “It's really great to be graduating with a first class, it shows that all the hard work has paid off. Now that I am going into my end role, all the hard work at university has paid off to get that position. Now I'm going to do the best that I can going forward to keep that job and do the best that I can to progress even further.”
