Intelligence and International Relations BA (Hons)

For HM Forces

Duration

18 Months

Location

Stoke-on-Trent campus

Our BA (Hons) Intelligence and IR degree is designed specifically for MOD Intelligence personnel.

Closed to new students. This course has now been replaced by our BA (Hons) International Relations and Intelligence top-up.

The course focuses on International Relations which will help contextualise your Intelligence Branch training and complement your professional development.

You will develop key skills in research, making and presenting written arguments, and critical analysis; all designed to enhance post-service employability.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: BA (Hons) Intelligence and International Relations

Course content

The BA (Hons) Intelligence and International Relations is taught over eight modules. You will study International Relation theory, considering key concepts such as the state, nation, anarchy, sovereignty and power. Plus, you will study modules in analysing modern society, global governance, intelligence in peace and war, issues in international security, issues in European defence and security, and conflict analysis.

As well as studying these modules around these subjects, you’ll also complete a module in evidence and reasoning, which will develop your essential ability to form and evaluate arguments, and teach you the principles of sound reasoning.

Fees

The total course fee is: £4,500

and the course is listed in two parts on the ELCAS website:

BA Intelligence and International Relations - £2250 (First 60 credits of study)

BA (Hons) Intelligence and International Relations - £2250 (Second 60 credits of study)

Fees for part-time study

Fees for part-time study are pro-rata to that paid for full-time study. This means that regardless of whether you choose part-time or full-time study, you pay the same amount for the course you choose to undertake.  The duration of the course and the fees you are charged each year or semester are determined by the speed at which you wish to progress through the course. This is called the 'intensity of study'. So if you choose to study at half the rate of a full-time  student, you’d pay half the full-time course fees each year, and take twice as long to complete your course compared to full-time. If you choose to study at a different intensity this will alter the duration and fee payment rate. If you would like to discuss what this means to you then please contact the HM Forces team.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

As a distance learning student, you'll be an active learner interacting with content, your fellow students and your module tutors. Support is available when you need it. You can contact your module tutor, your personal tutor, Information Service staff and subject specialist librarian by phone, email or in person.

Our teaching is supported through our Virtual Learning Environment called Blackboard. This means you can access a range of materials to support your studies wherever you are via your PC, tablet or phone. This includes accessing video, audio and discussion forums where you can debate subjects with your tutors and fellow students.

Assessment

All modules are individually assessed via one or more methods dependent upon the requirement of that module. The method of assessment is chosen to ensure that we can verify that you have met the learning outcomes of the module. These methods may include individual coursework assignments, written reports, and discussion contributions.

Typically, assignment submission and feedback will be via Blackboard Learning Portal. Module results will also be made available electronically.

Learning support

You will have access to Blackboard Learning Portal, our online learning environment, where the course information, handbook, tasks and discussion boards can be found. In addition to any textbooks that may be provided for you, all of the disciplinary Journals that the University subscribes to can be accessed online, and we have a substantial and growing collection of eBooks available to use.

A personal tutor will be appointed who is a subject matter expert. Support for any modules will be conducted face-to-face, via email, or telephone.

Additional support

Our AccessAbility Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

Feedback

Your course will provide you with opportunities to test your understanding of your subject informally (through formative feedback) before you complete the formal assessments. Each module normally includes practice or 'formative' assessments for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark but are essential for you to develop academically as a student. There is a formal or 'summative' assessment at the end of each module and the grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. You will normally receive feedback on coursework assessments within 20 working days following the date of submission. The feedback you receive will help to focus you to achieve better grades on the next set of modules you study.
