Yumi on LGBTQ+

Hear from Computer Science student, Yumi, on being in the LGBTQ+ community.

Computer Science student, Yumi

Heya I am Yumi 2nd year BSc Computer Science Student from Leicestershire. The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far, was not just coming out to my parents but also to friends, family and my lecturers in college.

Navigating London as a Gujarati trans-woman is like mixing traditional spices with modern vibes. It's all about blending my roots with my true self in a city that's as diverse as my own story.

University was always in the picture as I would like to pursue a career in Computer Science, I feel that coming to university would be a big help with me getting a role in the field.

Before I even chose a university, I did a lot of research on what universities were best with LGBTQ+ inclusion and diversity - that is why I chose Staffordshire University as I felt that I would be represented and confident in who I am.

My approach to campus culture involves direct efforts to uplift LGBTQ+ visibility and solidarity. I do this by placing pride flags around campus and organizing LGBTQ+ coffee mornings, aiming to carve out spaces where LGBTQ+ identities are openly celebrated and supported. This focused initiative helps to cultivate a more inclusive environment, specifically nurturing for those within the LGBTQ+ community, by promoting awareness and fostering connections.

Encouraging others to learn about diverse backgrounds fosters empathy and understanding, creating a campus culture that celebrates differences and promotes inclusivity. Sharing stories and experiences from various perspectives enriches everyone's worldview, making for a more cohesive and supportive community.

Navigating London as a Gujarati trans-woman is like mixing traditional spices with modern vibes.
