Foundation Year in Art and Design Highlights

Teams, Zines, & Future Cities: Exploring Art and Design

As part of the exploratory stages of the Foundation Art and Design course, students took part in a month-long module entitled Team Challenge.
Students worked in groups each week to respond to various briefs, including ‘Style Icon’- making a wearable sculpture inspired by a style icon and concludes in producing a Guerilla style image.
Following this Foundation students worked on their Zine Project, making a unique zine on a subject of choice.  Students then moved through to the Future Cities project creating a 3D model envisioning Stoke in the future.  With the final project, Transcriptions, students were asked to reproduce a famous artwork exploring installation and other mixed media methods.
The projects are all supported with guest lecturers from across the Creative Industries department, allowing students to gain specialist subject knowledge and skills from a wide variety of art and design practices.

Take a closer look at the impressive student outcomes from these projects and more on the University of Staffordshire Foundation Year in Art and Design Instagram.

Drawing Week & exciting trips

Drawing Week
During their first semester, our students take part in ‘Drawing Week’.  This includes fun packed sessions of different approaches to drawing and creative mark-making to develop individual skills in 2D recording.  The drawing week also included contributions and themed sessions from guest artists, Mally Mallinson - Subconscious and Automatic Drawing along with Alistair Woods - Colour Throwing.

Off-campus visits
Our students acquainted themselves with the local area with a trip to Stoke on Trent's Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. Here, they were able to view the city's long standing history of art and ceramics works.  A trip to Manchester City Art Gallery and the eclectic streets of Manchester's Northern Quarter is also planned to allow students to gather essential primary research and inspiration towards their Final Major Projects.
