English and Creative Writing Highlights

A book launch, spoken word, and another successful open mic night

In November we held a book launch for Philippa Holloway’s new short story collection Untethered (Parthian Press).  As Philippa is one of our Visiting Research Fellows, it was really great to hold this event which brought together students past and present.

Current students were joined by graduates at our Valentine’s open mic to read stories and poems, some of which even had a romantic theme.  Our open mic nights are regular, popular events that attract alumni, former teaching staff and also friends from beyond the course, studying in areas such as Drama and Music.  They're a great opportunity to network, socialise, collaborate, and also showcase your own work.

Final year students are working on their pieces for the Degree Show exhibition in June, a curated collection that will show the range of what can be achieved on the course.  The Degree Show is attended by professionals from a range of industries, as well as members of the public and the wider university community.  It's a great way to showcase talent and network, along with gaining valuable public perceptions of your work.

Performance poet, Tyler Luke Cunningham, will be delivering Spoken Word workshops in April.

Final year students are shaping up their independently designed critical or creative Negotiated Projects – the capstone of their academic work here at Staffs.

The Education Department have been working with students considering a career in teaching on their Post Graduate teacher training applications and letting them know about the bursaries available to support them.  We will always ensure students are supported in their goals post-graduation by exposing them to options and making expertise available.
