Abdur Rahman Shaik, a Staffordshire University student Innovation Consultant for KMF Group, explains how his friends helped him discover the Innovation and Productivity Pathfinder project.
Abdur completed his Mechanical Engineering degree and was looking for further opportunities to apply his knowledge from his course in a real-life setting.
After hearing more about Pathfinder, Abdur attended an initial meeting to hear more about how Unitemps Staffordshire University matches students and graduates to businesses across Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire.
About KMF Group
KMF Group is a Newcastle-under-Lyme-based business and is one of the largest sheet metal engineering and fabrication companies in the UK.
Abdur was able to apply his background knowledge of engineering and joined KMF Group as an IT Analyst for a 12-week placement. His main role was to build a breakdown maintenance portal to help industries, such as Aerospace & Defence, Telecommunications, Renewable Energy, Automotive and Food Processing.
Support Received
The support from Abdur's Innovation Advisor, John Carr, as well as the baseline knowledge provided from his course, has helped him complete the pilot programme successfully. Benefits Gained
Abdur applied his knowledge from his degree in a real setting and was also able to learn more about Computerized Numerical Controls (CNCs), whilst earning a competitive wage.
Another key benefit for Abdur was the chance to network and build connections in the manufacturing industry to help build his career.
KMF Group benefitted from the placement, as Abdur's manufacturing background allowed the business to calculate any financial losses, and measure their product breakdowns. Their business is now more efficient and reliable, saving costs and time.
Taking part in a placement supports the student in developing a valuable skill set to take beyond graduation, whilst earning money and studying. Juggling responsibilities from studies and work will be a brilliant selling point in an interview.
