Graduate story

I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2012 with a 2:1 in Psychology and Child Development. In my final year at University, I was offered an amazing opportunity to work with children on the autistic spectrum implementing the leading intervention for autism therapy- Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). I built up a client base in the local area and worked with multiple families, schools and organisations for 2 years.

I then moved back to Norfolk, where I grew up and began working with children with learning disabilities, mental health conditions and challenging behaviour in the behaviour unit of my local secondary school. I held this position for almost a year but I was eager to widen my knowledge and experience whilst challenging myself and helping others. I was then accepted onto a two year Masters degree in Social Work at Anglia Ruskin University.

I have fond memories of studying at Staffs and whenever I return, I feel as if I am coming home. Staffs is fantastic! The facilities are impeccable and the teaching is outstanding- the whole psychology team strive to make the content interesting and relevant to the current world of psychology. The lecturers are knowledgeable and so passionate about their topics and subject areas which really enriches the learning experience. My dissertation tutor, Helen Lee, was an absolute god send and really supported me throughout my final year, although most members of staff within the department would also stop for a chat and to offer help or support.

For prospective psychology students, I cannot recommend it enough! I can honestly say that I use knowledge that I gained from my degree everyday! It is an excellent foundation when working with people and promotes a greater understanding of why people behave and think in a particular way. Psychology is a huge subject and Staffs ensure that you explore a vast array of topics over the degree whilst developing a toolbox of knowledge and skills imperative to becoming a successful professional.
